Tension escalated in a Tondo neighborhood on Monday as a Manila city demolition crew commenced the removal of a barangay hall, despite vigorous opposition from residents and barangay officials.

Led by Engineer Joseph Bulanon, the demolition team began tearing down the concrete structure located at the corner of Samal and Orion streets in Dinalupihan, Tondo. The three-story building, which was reportedly still under construction, became the center of controversy.

Barangay 208 chairperson Rolly Reyes urged the demolition crew to cease operations, arguing the building served vital community functions. However, Bulanon maintained that the demolition order was already in place and that the barangay had been duly notified.

In a statement, Reyes highlighted the scarcity of open spaces in Manila, noting that previous barangay administrations had taken a "courageous and challenging" step by constructing an office designed to accommodate multiple village governance activities, including a daycare facility.

Reyes expressed concern over the loss of a central venue where residents — especially senior citizens — accessed essential services, participated in meetings, and received medical outreach. He acknowledged the office was built on a sidewalk but stressed that it significantly benefited the local community.

The barangay hall, erected in 2011, had not been subject to complaints or substantial criticism until the present dispute. Reyes emphasized that its sole intention was to serve the residents effectively.
