MANILA – Justin Brownlee played a pivotal role in Gilas Pilipinas’ comeback, scoring crucial points in the final quarter to secure a 103-98 victory against the Macau Black Bears during an exhibition game held Monday night at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Brownlee, who serves as the resident import for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, posted a double-double with 32 points and 15 rebounds. He also contributed five assists, a steal, and a block, demonstrating his all-around impact on the floor.
"It was good. It feels great to be healthy," Brownlee shared after the game, reflecting on his performance. "I definitely keep working on my conditioning. I did a good job though."
He also highlighted the collective effort in improving fitness among the team, noting, "Not only me, but a few of the guys on the team that haven’t been playing, the guys from Japan and Korea, so we’ve been doing a good job in conditioning and practicing."
Dwight Ramos supported Brownlee’s effort by adding 19 points, including two three-pointers. Additional contributions came from Ariel John Edu with 15 points, Kevin Quiambao with 14, and Earl Scottie Thompson scoring 10.
Gilas faced a significant challenge after trailing by as much as 21 points in the first half. However, Ramos and Jaymar Perez spearheaded a strong third-quarter run that narrowed the gap to 81-79.
In the decisive fourth quarter, Brownlee ignited Gilas with three straight three-point shots. Quiambao followed up with a three-point play, pushing the lead to 93-85. Although the Black Bears briefly closed in at 92-93, Brownlee’s critical three-point play and clutch baskets from Thompson and Ramos ultimately sealed the triumph.
For the Macau Black Bears, William Douglas led the offense with 23 points, while Archibald Anthony added 22. Jenning Leung and Omari Peek tallied 14 and 10 points, respectively. Filipino-American center Quentin Millora Brown contributed six points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block.
This exhibition win highlights Gilas Pilipinas’ growing cohesion and resilience as they continue to prepare for upcoming competitions.
