LA TRINIDAD, Benguet — In response to persistent flooding issues triggered by heavy rainfall and weather disturbances, the municipal government of La Trinidad is actively planning improvements to its flood control and drainage infrastructure. Mayor Roderick Awingan highlighted the importance of implementing long-term, coordinated solutions to effectively safeguard the community, especially in times of typhoons and continuous rain.
"Flooding remains a recurrent challenge impacting residents' safety, economic activities, and infrastructure stability. We must develop comprehensive and well-coordinated strategies," Awingan stated.
The areas most susceptible to flooding are Barangay Pico and the Strawberry Farm vicinity near the Benguet Agri-Pinoy Trading Center along the diversion road. These locations have consistently faced severe flooding during heavy downpours.
Recently, La Trinidad has endured significant impacts from typhoons such as "Crising," "Dante," and "Emong," along with the southwest monsoon season. Besides extensive flooding, the municipality has also recorded numerous instances of landslides and rockslides, raising concerns over the safety of its residents and infrastructure.
Mayor Awingan stressed that the planned enhancements must be carried out in partnership with both national and local agencies, particularly the Department of Public Works and Highways, to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of flood control measures.
