The Philippines and India are preparing to undertake a historic joint maritime patrol within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the West Philippine Sea, marking the first coordinated naval exercise of its kind between the two nations.

This milestone was announced by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. during a visit aboard the Indian Navy’s INS Shakti (A57) on Thursday evening. The initiative stems from earlier discussions at the Raisina Dialogue 2025 in New Delhi held from March 17 to 19, where Brawner represented the AFP for the first time at the prestigious global forum.

Brawner described the upcoming patrol as a significant step beyond ceremonial cooperation, stating, "It precedes a significant milestone — the first ever joint maritime patrol between the Philippine Navy and the Indian Navy in the West Philippine Sea."

Highlighting the strategic importance of the region, Brawner said the joint exercise exemplifies the shared commitment of both countries to safeguarding freedom of navigation and enforcing international maritime law. "As we stand watch over a region vital to global trade and security, we do not do so in isolation, but in partnership with nations who share our values," he remarked.

The AFP chief also lauded India’s dedication to strategic autonomy, defense innovation, and democratic principles, which continue to strengthen bilateral defense cooperation. He pointed to India’s support for the Philippines’ defense modernization, notably through the acquisition of the Indian-produced BrahMos missile system, which significantly boosts the AFP’s operational capabilities.

Beyond hardware, Brawner emphasized that personal ties among military personnel form the foundation for enduring defense partnerships: "It is the human bonds between our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines that will define the future of our defense cooperation."

National Security Adviser Eduardo Año also recognized the deepening maritime collaboration, citing ongoing capacity-building efforts and exchanges in education and training. He highlighted the significance of the Philippines-India maritime dialogue, which has been the primary framework for cooperation since 2003 and 2004.

Año acknowledged the Indian Navy’s pivotal role in enforcing the rule of law and maintaining a secure maritime environment, describing it as "steadfast defenders and agents of maintaining secure and peaceful maritime order in the region."

This joint maritime venture underscores the strengthening ties between the Philippines and India as they collectively navigate complex regional security dynamics and promote stability in a strategically critical area.
