PNP on High Alert as Typhoon Tino Threatens Visayas and Mindanao
MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has placed all units on alert and started deploying personnel in anticipation of Typhoon Tino (international name Kalmaegi), which is threatening the Visayas and Mindanao.
"We are carrying out the instructions of President (Ferdinand R.) Marcos Jr. to put people's safety first. Even while our policemen are safeguarding the Undas observance, we have already pre-positioned responders, vehicles, and rescue teams in areas threatened by the storm. This is the kind of PNP service our people deserve — one that anticipates danger before it arrives," PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a statement Monday.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), as of the 11 a.m. bulletin, Tino has intensified into a typhoon, with maximum sustained winds of 120 km per hour near the center and gusts up to 150 kph.
Police teams were dispatched early as October 31 to vulnerable areas prone to flooding, landslides, and storm surges, despite thousands of officers already deployed for Undas 2025 to manage cemeteries, travel hubs, and major roadways.
Nationally, police units have activated disaster action plans in coordination with local government units, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, and other emergency responders. Command centers are operational 24/7 to monitor weather updates, evacuation requirements, and road conditions, especially in provinces within the typhoon’s projected path.
Nartatez urged the public to stay informed, avoid unnecessary travel in heavy rain-affected areas, and immediately contact unified 911 or the nearest police station if assistance is needed.
"No matter the occasion, whether it's Undas or a storm, our duty is the same: to protect lives and maintain order," he added. ❤️
