The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has called on Filipinos currently in Jakarta to remain indoors and steer clear of large gatherings amid ongoing violent demonstrations throughout Indonesia. The DFA emphasized the importance of vigilance and caution to ensure the safety of its nationals.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta confirmed that the city remains relatively safe but continues to monitor developments closely, promising to issue updates as necessary.
The nationwide protests, which began on Monday, center around low wages and allegations of exorbitant allowances granted to lawmakers. The situation intensified following the release of footage depicting a police vehicle running over a motorcycle delivery driver.
Tragically, on Friday, a fire incident linked to protesters at a parliament building in eastern Indonesia resulted in at least three fatalities and five injuries.
Demonstrations persist in other major cities such as Bandung, Yogyakarta, Solo, Surabaya, and Makassar, with protesters advocating for social justice and better conditions for the underprivileged.
President Prabowo Subianto has urged calm, assuring the public that the government is committed to addressing their concerns. He stated, "We are committed to doing our best for the people."
Filipinos impacted by the unrest are encouraged to reach out to the Philippine Embassy through its Assistance-to-Nationals WhatsApp line at +62811887334 for support and assistance.
