The Philippines women's national football team is set to defend their ASEAN Women’s MSIG Serenity Cup title, three years after their historic victory on home soil in 2022. Goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel expressed the squad's determination to retain the championship as the tournament unfolds from August 6 to 19.
"Our objective is straightforward — we want to compete fiercely and defend our title. We want to win," said McDaniel, 27, whose team has been placed in Group B alongside Myanmar, Australia, and Timor-Leste.
Acknowledging the stiff competition, McDaniel commented, "Australia and Myanmar pose significant challenges in our group, but this tournament features several strong teams. Regardless of the draw, every match will be a demanding yet exciting contest, and we are eager to face these opponents."
Reflecting on the pressures of defending their crown, McDaniel described it as a "privilege." She noted, "Pressure accompanies every match, whether it’s a friendly or a title defense. Still, pressure is a privilege because it signifies our chance to secure back-to-back championships, which is our ultimate goal."
Playing away from home might ease their tension, she added: "Winning on home soil presents unique challenges since performing in front of family and local supporters can heighten the pressure. Competing abroad may help us stay calm."
The team is mindful of Vietnam’s passionate fanbase, but McDaniel remains confident: "Vietnam consistently draws large crowds, and we have experienced similar intense atmospheres recently. We believe we can rise to that challenge."
The Filipinas’ recent success isn’t limited to the ASEAN tournament; they reached the semifinals of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup and participated in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023. McDaniel emphasized how these experiences have fueled their hunger for excellence.
"Our team has navigated numerous challenges and grown stronger through remarkable opportunities such as the World Cup. This journey has solidified our unity, and we're prepared to tackle any obstacles ahead," she said.
The Philippines will kick off their title defense by facing Timor-Leste on August 7, followed by a match against Australia on August 10, and concluding the group stage against Myanmar on August 13.
Group A features Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Cambodia, with the leaders from each group advancing to the crossover semifinals slated for August 16 at the Lach Tray Stadium. The tournament final will also take place at the same venue on August 19.
