SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility division of SM Supermalls, reaffirmed its dedication to inclusivity during National Disability Rights Week 2025 by organizing a variety of initiatives aimed at empowering and celebrating persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The weeklong observance spanned several SM malls across the country, highlighting the fundamental rights of every individual to dignity, opportunity, and equitable access to public spaces and services. The organization hosted several key advocacy programs and signature events centered on resilience and education.

One of the standout events was the Angels Walk for Autism, held in partnership with the Autism Society Philippines (ASP). The walk attracted over 40,000 participants at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, showcasing a powerful message of unity, awareness, and acceptance for individuals on the autism spectrum.

In addition, SM Cares conducted the Happy Walk for Down Syndrome nationwide in collaboration with the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines (DSAPI). This event celebrated the unique abilities and contributions of those with Down Syndrome, reinforcing the ongoing need for inclusion and visibility.

The Emergency Preparedness Forum, a continuous initiative by SM Cares, provided crucial disaster readiness training to senior citizens and persons with disabilities, equipping participants with the knowledge needed to enhance personal safety in emergencies.

To further foster inclusive service, SM Cares also delivered Sensitivity Training sessions for mall front-line staff, ensuring all customers, regardless of ability, receive compassionate and respectful assistance.

Beyond these events, SM Supermalls maintains physical accessibility features such as Braille signage in elevators, accessible parking spaces, wheelchair lifts, dedicated restrooms for persons with disabilities, and trained staff. These permanent installations reflect the company’s ongoing investment in creating barrier-free environments.

Looking ahead, SM Cares will host two additional events in August 2025 aimed at persons with disabilities: "Movies for the Blind" at SM Megamall on August 2, and "The Blackout Zone," an immersive awareness experience at SM North EDSA from August 25 to 29. Both initiatives are designed to foster empathy and provide accessible entertainment options.

Steven Tan, president of SM Supermalls, emphasized the organization’s commitment, stating, "At SM Cares, we believe that creating a truly inclusive world begins with listening, learning, and walking alongside the people we serve. National Disability Rights Week is more than a commemoration — it’s a call to action to build a kinder, more accessible future."

The public is encouraged to join SM Cares’ advocacy programs to further awareness, understanding, and support for the community of persons with disabilities.
