President Marcos Jr. Inaugurates Angat Water Tunnel No. 5, Boosting Mega Manila’s Water Supply to Nearly 8 Billion Liters Daily
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. officially inaugurated Angat Water Tunnel No. 5, a major infrastructure project that expands the water transport capacity serving Mega Manila from 6 billion liters daily to nearly 8 billion liters, providing dependable access for almost 20 million consumers.
The newly completed tunnel increases daily water transport capability by 1.6 billion liters and is a critical addition to the existing Angat tunnel network. This expansion enables the simultaneous rehabilitation of older tunnels, ensuring sustained reliability and long-term water security.
"The inauguration of Tunnel No. 5 underscores our administration’s commitment to provide reliable access and modernize our essential infrastructure," President Marcos said in his speech. "Through tireless modernization, we guarantee clean water for every Filipino household, especially as we face climate challenges."
Officials highlighted the project’s vital role in climate adaptation efforts, reinforcing Metro Manila’s resilience to droughts and other extreme weather events. The tunnel’s enhanced capacity strengthens the water distribution system’s flexibility and efficiency, directly supporting national efforts toward sustainable and secure water resources.
Infrastructure experts noted that this modernization embodies the administration’s "Maasahan at Masipag" governance approach, which prioritizes strategic investments to strengthen the nation’s water security.
Secretary of Public Works and Highways praised the project as a milestone in infrastructure development, emphasizing that this modernized tunnel system will help maintain steady supply, reduce system interruptions, and support the growing demand across Metro Manila and neighboring provinces.
With the new Angat Water Tunnel No. 5 operational, older tunnels can undergo proper rehabilitation without compromising supply, marking a new era in the Philippine water sector’s evolution.
"President Marcos is leading as the reliable modernizer of essential national infrastructure, ensuring that millions of Filipinos receive clean and safe water daily," said an official close to the project.
The President’s message resonates with the government’s vision: "Reliable Access. Tireless Modernization. Clean water for every Filipino household," signaling ongoing infrastructure efforts to bolster the country’s resilience amidst national growth and climate uncertainties.
