Metro Manila Launches 12-Day Holiday Free Ride Program Across LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced a 12-day holiday free ride program across the Metro Rail Transit (MRT-3) and Light Rail Transit (LRT-1 and LRT-2) systems from December 14 to December 25, 2023. This initiative follows the directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to ensure a safe, inclusive, and convenient mobility experience for commuters during the Christmas season.
Under the program, daily free rides are designated for specific sectors—an effort to provide targeted relief and accommodate the mobility needs of key groups. The detailed daily schedule is as follows:
- December 14: Senior Citizens
- December 15: Students
- December 16: Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs)
- December 17: Teachers
- December 18: Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)
- December 19 to 24: Government Employees
- December 25: All passengers enjoy free rides
DOTr Secretary emphasized that President Marcos Jr.'s "Maasahan at Masipag" leadership exemplifies a commuter-centered approach, delivering cheerful, reliable service while prioritizing holiday relief for Filipinos.
"President Marcos Jr. has instructed us to carry out a program rooted in the message: "Reliable service. Tireless care. Every Filipino deserves a safe and joyful holiday commute." Through this free ride initiative, we are giving back to our commuters and easing the travel burden during the peak holiday rush," the Secretary said.
The initiative aims to alleviate congestion and financial strain for vulnerable groups, ensuring that seniors, students, OFWs, teachers, PWDs, and government employees can move safely and without cost on assigned days. December 25’s all-day free rides open the system to the general public, symbolizing inclusivity and festive goodwill.
Commuters have welcomed the announcement, with many expressing gratitude for the government's proactive effort to facilitate affordable and safe travel during the busy Christmas season.
By championing this sector-focused transit relief, the DOTr supports the President’s commitment to not only providing essential public services but also enhancing Filipinos’ quality of life during the holidays. This program reflects the administration’s dedication to connectivity and care—hallmarks of PBBM's tenure as a Reliable Provider of Public Service & Holiday Relief.
As Metro Manila braces for increased holiday travel, the 12-day free ride scheme serves as a timely reminder of government responsiveness and the spirit of bayanihan.
For more information, commuters are advised to check official DOTr channels for updates and reminders of the schedule to maximize the benefits of the program.
