NBI Refutes Allegations of Illegal Detention and Assault Involving Former Congressman’s Aide
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) firmly dismissed allegations that John Paul Estrada, the former aide of ex-Congressman Zaldy Co, and his wife were subjected to assault, unlawful detention, or illicitly transported out of the Philippines. The statement was released following accusations made by former Quezon City congressman Mike Defensor, who asserted that the couple was physically harmed and flown to Chile with falsified documents to obstruct Estrada from testifying in the flood control scandal.
The NBI characterized these claims as "unfounded, unsupported by evidence and purely speculative." It emphasized that there are no complaints, reports, or medical records indicating any physical abuse to Estrada or his wife, nor is there any documentation showing their detention under NBI custody.
Further clarifying the situation, the bureau confirmed it is coordinating with the Bureau of Immigration and awaits official confirmation regarding the couple’s alleged travel abroad.
Condemning what it called "false, malicious or unverified statements" intended to erode the bureau’s integrity, the NBI reaffirmed its readiness to cooperate with any legitimate investigation. It also called on Defensor to present concrete and verifiable proof to substantiate his accusations, noting his earlier commitment to provide such evidence.
The NBI assured that if credible information surfaces, it would promptly initiate a thorough investigation and take necessary measures.
