NBA Investigates Multiple Teams Amid Illegal Gambling Probe Including Los Angeles Lakers
The National Basketball Association has initiated a broad investigation into illegal gambling operations affecting multiple teams, with the Los Angeles Lakers among those asked to provide documents and records, sources revealed Sunday.
Approximately a dozen Lakers staff members, including assistant trainer Mike Mancias and executive administrator Randy Mims, are cooperating with the league’s inquiry, though their involvement does not imply any wrongdoing.
"The NBA engaged an independent law firm to investigate the allegations in the indictment once it was made public," a league spokesperson explained. "As is standard in these kinds of investigations, a number of different individuals and organizations were asked to preserve documents and records. Everyone has been fully cooperative."
The Lakers have drawn particular attention due to the presence of superstar LeBron James, who is currently in his seventh season with the team. This heightened focus follows a federal indictment last month linked to illicit gambling rings, which included charges against former player and assistant coach Damon Jones. Jones, a known associate of James, is accused of attempting to sell confidential information regarding James’ availability to bettors during the 2022-23 season.
The investigation’s scope extends beyond the Lakers, implicating several other NBA figures. Among those arrested are Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, accused of involvement in fixed poker games, and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier. Rozier allegedly provided advance notice to an associate that he intended to leave a game early by simulating an injury, information which was exploited to place substantial bets totaling over $200,000 predicting his underperformance, according to a Department of Justice announcement.
This wide-ranging probe underscores the league’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport amid growing concerns about illegal gambling influences within professional basketball.
