Weljon Mindoro Reflects on SEA Games Setback, Vows Stronger Preparation for Asian Games

In his inaugural appearance in the amateur boxing scene at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, Weljon Mindoro, previously undefeated as a professional, entered the competition as a strong contender for gold. However, the boxer from Zamboanga faced a setback after exiting in the semifinals, securing only a bronze medal.

Speaking at a press conference in Paranaque City, Mindoro shared insights into the challenges he encountered transitioning from professional to amateur boxing. "I am a professional. Amateur and professional boxing are different. In professional bouts, rounds are longer, allowing you to recover if you lose early rounds. But in amateur boxing, it’s fast-paced, and judges focus on the number of clean punches," he explained.

He admitted that adjusting to an aggressive style proved difficult, particularly facing Vietnam’s swift opponent Phuoc Tung Bui. "I needed to move quickly and throw punches fast, but I couldn’t maintain the necessary speed, partly because of my frustration during the match," Mindoro revealed.

Physical preparation also posed a significant challenge. Mindoro had to lose 20 kilograms in just one month, dropping from around 95 kg to 78 kg before the games. He noted the rapid weight cut greatly affected his performance. "My body didn’t fully recover due to the short timeframe. If I had two months to prepare, losing even 10 kilograms, I’m confident I could be at my best," he said.

Looking ahead, Mindoro is determined to refine his training regimen and is optimistic about future amateur competitions, including potential Asian Games participation. "If I get selected for the national team to compete at the Asian Games, I’m ready and will strive hard to win," he stated.

The 2026 Asian Games are scheduled in Japan from September to October. Mindoro expressed confidence that his SEA Games experience has better equipped him for upcoming amateur contests. Additionally, he revealed plans to continue professional fights later this year, with a slated main event in Zamboanga City promoted by Eumir Marcial next month.

"The SEA Games experience, despite the disappointment, has been a valuable lesson to push myself harder and improve my skills," Mindoro concluded.
